TAILs up: India aHEAD after day 1 at Capetown
Come to think of it - Rahuld Dravid could have as easily said HEADS, and the belter of a wicket that has been created for the India vs South Africa decider Test would have possibly resulted in day 1 ending with South Africa batting at 250/3. But at the all important toss, the Indian captain predicted correctly and when the coin completed its short U-journey back and came to rest on the Newlands surface, it was TAILS up for India. In both the previous Tests on this tour, the captains who has won the toss has gone on to win the match. And just like Dravid did today, both chose to bat first.
Come to think of it
- the most crucial event of the match may have actually happened before a
single ball is bowled!!
Come to think of it
- lots and lots of matches are actually decided not on day 4 or day 5, but on day 1.
Come to think of it
- Cricket is a funny game!! No wonder they keep saying it all the time.

Have been recommending it for a long time..Cricket will me a much better game, especially as the toss is crucial, uf u can just announce ur teams after the toss is won...
India wins the toss, bhajji comes in..loses, munaf (maybe unfit as u say) stays...otherwise dada will genuinely become the all-rounder he is not...
that's a very good suggestion and unlike what i am going to propose, a very practical one too.
but why can't we try and bring a complete end to this unevenness - why can't we a bit more experimental?
for example - team 1 wins toss so it has the right to decide whatever it wants to do - bat first or bowl, but give the other team some thing else to even things out. say team 1 bats first -then team 2 could be given 2 extra fielders for the first 25 overs!!! if team 2 fields first, team 2 gets an extra batsman or a batsman of their choice gets 2 lives!!
howzatt??
See my own idea:
The toss should be replaced by the bid
http://wineforspicewarrenedwardes.blogspot.com/2007/03/toss-should-be-replaced-by-bid.html
Essentially before each match the captains bid in runs sacrificed (Bid Byes) for the right to choose whether to bat or field.
The winner of The Bid elects and the loser with the lower bid receives Bid Byes - the amount of The Bid.
